It suggests a new class of systems that can understand how people feel and respond accordingly. It sounds advanced, human-centered, and almost inevitable.
It also hides a great deal of confusion.
Emotional AI does not mean AI has emotions. It does not mean a system feels empathy, concern, sadness, affection, loyalty, guilt, frustration, or care. A machine does not become compassionate because it says, “I understand how difficult this must be.” A voice agent does not become emotionally aware because it sounds calm.
